Ahead of the restart of domestic travel from May 25, Union Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday announced new guidelines for air travel and said that the travel fare will have a minimum and maximum limit.

While addressing in a presser, the aviation minister stated that the government will direct lower and upper limit on the fare for air travel and the airlines will have to adhere to the same during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Aviation Minister also announced the newly classified flight routs in seven categories and said that all routes will fall within these seven slots. This will remain operative for three months - till one minute to midnight on August 24, Hardeep Singh Puri said.

The minister also talked about the ‘Vande Bharat Mission’ which was announced on May 5 and said that the government’s efforts were not to bring everyone who wanted to come back but those who were actually stuck in foreign countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s what you need to know about the guidelines for domestic air travel which will be operational on May 25:

  • The government has set a minimum and maximum fare. The Aviation Minister said that the domestic air travel in case of Delhi and Mumbai will be between ₹3,500 for a journey between 90-120 minutes while the maximum fare would be ₹10,000.
  • The Civil Aviation Secretary informed that 40 per cent of seats for air travel will have to be sold at a fare less than the midpoint of the lower and upper limit. The midpoint of ₹3,500 and ₹10,000 is ₹6,700 which means that 40 per cent tickets will be sold at a price which is less than ₹6,700.
  • While keeping in mind the need to practice social distancing norms, the Aviation Minister said that the middle seats in flights will be kept vacant. The flight operations at the initial stage will limit to only 33 per cent capacity of its approved summer schedule 2020.
  • The Aarogya Setu App will be mandatory on board the flight and its status would be obtained to ensure that a passenger is free of COVID-19 symptoms. If the passengers have red status on Aarogya Setu App, they will not be allowed to travel.
  • The routes for flights have been categorised in seven parts - flight times of less than 40 minutes, 40-60 minutes, 60-90 minutes, 90-120 minutes, 120-150 minutes, 150-180 minutes and 180-210 minutes.
