Alibaug, Murud-Janjira rated as ‘B-category’ tourist destination

This decision has been taken by the state government in connection with Minister of State for Tourism and Guardian Minister of Raigad District Aditi Tatkare to give importance to the development of these tourist destinations in Raigad district.

Three tourist destination -- Alibaug, Murud-Janjira and Shrivardhan in Raigad district have been accorded 'B' category status. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday, February 15.

This decision has been taken by the state government to give importance to the development of these tourist destinations in Raigad district, which is close to Mumbai and Pune.

As these tourist destinations have got the status of 'B' class tourist destinations, various tourism facilities and infrastructure facilities will be developed here by the government. This will give a big boost to tourism here, said Aaditya Thackeray.

This decision has been taken by the state government in connection with the initiative of Minister of State for Tourism and Guardian Minister of Raigad District Aditi Tatkare.

Alibaug is a scenic tourist destination on the coast of Maharashtra. Historic Kulaba Fort during the Shivaji era, Samadhi of Sarkhel Kanhoji Raje Angre, 150- year-old British Observatory, Shrikaneshwar, Srisiddheshwar, Shri Rameshwar, Sribalaji Temple, Shri Kashi Vishweshwar Temple etc. are the tourist places to visit.

Murud is known for its notable beach, and for proximity to Janjira off the coast of Rajapuri, a sea fort. Murud-Janjira is the local name for a fort situated at the coastal City of Murud, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The Palace of Nawab is also located in the city. The palace was built in 1885 for administration purposes.

Murud-Janjira is the local name of a famous fort and tourist place situated on an island just off the coastal city of Murud. The sea fort at Murud-Janjira is one of the most unique and beautiful forts in India. Situated in Raigad district of Maharashtra, it is surrounded by the Arabian sea on all sides. The fort is only accessible by sail boats and ferry services from the coastal village of Murud.

Besides, the Padmadurg fort was built on the low-lying Kamsa rock jutting out from the sea which is situated only 10 kilometers from Janjira. Shri Koteshwari Gram Devte,  Shri Bhogeshwar and Shri Lakshmi Narayan are among some ancient temples to visit in the city. Moreover, Phansad Sanctuary and Khokari Tomb are also tourist attractions.

In Shrivardhan Nagar Parishad area, temples like Kalbhairav, Jivaneshwar, Somjadevi, Kusumavati etc. and Peshwa temples etc. are of Peshwa or an earlier period. Also, there is a 4 km long beach at Shrivardhan which is visited by a large number of tourists.

Tourism development in Konkan is being promoted by the state government. For this, the beach shack policy has been approved by the government. Under this policy, Varsoli beach at Alibag in Raigad district and Harihareshwar beach at Shrivardhan will be developed. Beaches in other districts of Konkan will also be developed under this policy.

Moreover, it has come to light that Hotel Taj Group is investing in Sindhudurg and Chippewa Airport is also set to open soon, said minister Aaditya Thackeray.
