In a recently held committee meeting, Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) stated that they have suffered a loss of ₹76.70 crores in November 2019. After analysing several factors, the committee mentioned that the losses were incurred due to negligent and lackadaisical approach of staff, traffic detention, accidental assault and maintenance costs.

General Manager of BEST, Surendrakumar Bagde said that they are facing staff crunch and are planning to conduct a disciplinary session for their staff in order to improve their performance. Officials had earlier kept a target of covering 1.70 crore km in the city, however, as per records, the services in November 2019 covered only 42.73 lakh km (23.76 per cent). It is expected that the arrival of mini bus can prove to be a game-changer.

The decision to run BEST mini-buses in Mumbai has certainly made the citizens happy. There are a total of seven mini-buses currently running between Andheri stations and Versova, carrying over 475 passengers every day. The authorities claim that the overall revenue generated by all seven buses comes down to around Rs 20,000 per day.

BEST’s mini-buses are quite affordable compared to metros or auto rickshaws, where the ticket prices have been kept at a reasonable cost, starting at ₹6. In comparison, tickets for the metro can cost you up to ₹20 for the same route, while auto rickshaws can charge up to ₹30 or 40 for the same.
