The Government of Maharashtra is going to implement Biometric Attendance (Biometric Attendance Std XI & XII Students) for the students of class XI and XII in the state secondary and higher secondary schools from the next academic year. The initiative will require students to mark attendance using facial recognition or fingerprint-based biometrics (Biometric Attendance).

This important and equally strategic decision has been taken by the state government with the aim of increasing student attendance in school classes. This decision will be implemented from next academic year. Due to this decision, students will now have 75% attendance in class for the entire academic year. Many students take regular admission in state secondary and higher secondary schools. However, without actually attending the class, they go to private lessons.

All this is done with mutual agreement between the school and private coaching centers (Coaching Classes) and the parents. So the main objective behind this decision is to break these unauthorized ties of collusion and bring students back to their original purpose. Currently, many students take admission in junior colleges in middle and higher secondary schools across the state i.e. junior colleges.

However, many students have different preferences as they expect to complete the academic year by attending classes after admission and focus on school studies. These students, instead of attending classes, attend private coaching classes and institutes for competitive exams like NEET, JEE and MHT-CET.

Often there is informal coordination between coaching centers and colleges so that attendance criteria can be avoided.
