The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its action against construction sites violating air pollution control norms, issuing stop-work notices to 1,073 sites across the city between October 2025 and February 2026.
These notices were served to a mix of private projects, civic works, and developments undertaken by other authorities. However, only 117 of these sites have managed to resume operations after complying with the prescribed pollution mitigation measures, indicating a significant gap in adherence.
In addition to stop-work orders, the civic body also issued 2,119 show-cause notices during inspections carried out by its enforcement teams over the same four-month period. This reflects a broader push by the BMC to curb dust pollution, which is a major contributor to declining air quality in the city.
The enforcement drive covered all 24 administrative wards of Mumbai, with the highest number of stop-work notices at 131 being recorded in the N ward, which includes Ghatkopar and Vikhroli.
This was followed by 125 notices in P-North ward (Malad) and 106 in S ward (covering Kanjurmarg and Bhandup).
Other wards with significant enforcement activity include:
On the other end of the spectrum, some wards reported minimal violations. These include:
The surge in such actions highlighted the civic body's ongoing efforts to tackle construction-related dust pollution, especially during months when air quality typically worsens. By targeting non-compliant sites, the civic body aims to ensure stricter implementation of environmental guidelines and reduce particulate pollution across Mumbai.
Despite the large number of notices issued, the relatively low rate of compliance suggests that sustained monitoring and stricter penalties may be necessary to bring about long-term improvements.
