The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed a new contractor for the daily cleaning of the 3.5 km stretch of Worli Koliwada beach. The decision was taken after the previous contract expired. The new contract is for one year and the municipality has approved a fund of about INR 1.5 crore for this period, which means an expenditure of about INR 38,000 per day.

Although many beaches in Mumbai are tourist destinations, fishing is still the main occupation in some areas. The responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness of these beaches lies with the municipal corporation.

Due to the high fishing activity and large number of tourists visiting these beaches, the amount of garbage remains high in these coastal areas. Apart from this, floating garbage carried by the sea waves accumulates on the shore, making regular cleaning necessary.

As the previous contract expired, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation conducted a tender process to select a new agency. After this process, M/s Asian Traders Company has been selected.

The municipality has approved a fund of 1.44 crores (including taxes) for this work. Last year, the daily cleaning cost of Worli beach was 38,050.
