Between October 25 to December 31, 2023, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has registered 1,207 cases and collected a fine of ₹45.77 lakh by taking action against illegal dumping of debris and burning garbage at construction sites.
This development comes amid concerns over deteriorating air quality and rising air pollution in Mumbai.
According to reports, the highest fine of ₹7.69 lakh was collected from 97 violators in Bandra, Khar and Santacruz West areas.
Moreover, the civic body collected a fine of ₹27.19 lakh from violators for not cleaning premises and not covering dumping trucks from November 4 to December 29, 2023. Around 282 cases were registered for illegal dumping of debris on the roadside and a fine of ₹16 lakh was collected from violators.
Additionally, the BMC has issued stop-work notices to 868 to builders and contractors involved in various infrastructure projects in Mumbai in the last two months. However, only 57 notices were rescinded for construction sites that complied with guidelines to control air pollution.
Out of the 6,690 construction and infrastructure sites in the city, 2,995 have received intimation letters since October 25. The specially formed 96 squads across all 24 administrative wards conduct daily inspections at these sites. The squads have issued 603 show-cause notices to both construction and infrastructure sites.
It is pertinent to note that the city has witnessed an increase in air pollution post-monsoon. Therefore, to combat rising pollution, the BMC undertook several measures to settle dust.
