According to the latest reports, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal as well as Mumbai Port Trust Chairman Rajiv Jalota are among the two bureaucrats in Maharashtra who have been empanelled in the rank of the secretary by the Centre.

Based on accounts, Chahal, an IAS officer of the 1989 batch has elaborated on how the empanelment as secretary by the Union government is one of the crucial milestones in the career of an IAS officer. It has been reported that Chahal is in the rank of additional chief secretary.

It is a long-standing belief that Chahal shone in the limelight owing to his magnificent work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Likewise, Jalota was in the Maharashtra government for a considerable time, a year ago he was appointed to lead the MbPT in the rank of additional chief secretary.

Narratives suggest that empanelment is a long-drawn process with an approval granted by a special high-level committee of secretaries. Chahal reportedly has four years of service left. On the other hand, Jalota has over two years left in service.

A special committee assess an officer's competence that include his ability to curate policies and plans at the national level, accounts mentioned. It is anticipated that nearly 30 bureaucrats in a state take up central deputation.
