Even though the civic body of Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has brought the outbreak of the coronavirus under control, the authorities still remain concerned about the T ward – Mulund, where the growth of COVID-19 cases is the highest. In addition, having a population of about 7.50 lakh, Mulund has so far clocked 13,764 confirmed cases, including 362 deaths.

Moreover, the BMC had imposed strict guidelines before permitting shops to reopen in the area to prevent a surge in cases of coronavirus. However, after the resumption of shops in the area, the T ward has experienced overcrowding across the RRT Road and Subhash Road. In addition, huge crowds were also seen at Chindhi Market, where old clothes are up for sale thrice a week.

Meanwhile, on Monday, December 14, Maharashtra recorded 2,949 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 18.83 lakh cases. Of the 2,949 new cases, 477 were in Mumbai. Moreover, the state’s death toll climbed to 48,269 with 60 more people succumbing to the coronavirus.

On the other hand, post-Diwali, areas of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Washim, Pune, Kolhapur, Nashik, Nandurbar, Akola, and Nagpur have seen a rise in active infections. Percentage-wise, Washim, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Akola and Nagpur have seen a jump in active infections by 40 per cent or more. According to authorities, rise in the number of cases in the districts may be due to increased mobility during the festivities or because some of these districts started recording COVID-19 cases much later than others.

However, as per reports, earlier on Friday, the BMC informed that at least 500 teams of five trained personnel each will be deployed for administering the COVID-19 vaccine in the city. The first to get vaccinated will be health workers followed by frontline workers, people above the age of 50 and those suffering from co-morbidities, it said in a release. The Maharashtra government last month formed a task force to manage the distribution and administration of the COVID-19 vaccine in the state, with a task force set up at the city level.
