Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in order to meet its property tax collection target for 2020-21 has started cracking down on property tax defaulters by attaching their movable assets and disconnecting water supply and sewers.

On Sunday, March 14, the civic body confiscated the BMW car of a real estate developer from Chembur for property tax dues of INR 38 lakhs. The car was released after the developer paid INR 19 lakh.

Moreover, the civic body also sealed the office of another real estate developer in Chembur for defaulting on payment of INR 1.1 crores. According to reports, water connections of Solitaire Corporate Park and Vertex Building were disconnected and sewers were blocked in the Andheri area.

On the other hand, the BMC has issued strict instructions to the housing societies further issuing a directive. According to data shared by the BMC, 90 per cent of the new COVID-19 cases found in Mumbai in the last two months are found in housing societies due to which there has been an impending need to impose restrictions on the premises of societies to curb the spread of the contagious disease.

Moreover, the BMC has directed officials to take strict action against those violating rules in such residential buildings that have more patients than in dense, cramped and slum areas. In addition, the BMC has appealed to housing complexes to inform the administration about the violators of COVID-19 rules. The civic body now also plans to intensify the crackdown on restricted residential buildings. Those who flout home-quarantine rules will compulsorily be shifted to institutional quarantine and an FIR will be registered against them.
