In the wake of coronavirus outbreak and increasing cases in Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday directed the closure of shops in Mumbai. The shops on different roads in the city on alternate days shall remain shut till further orders.

The Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the BMC has given the orders to shut shops by exercising the power conferred under section 2,3 and 4 of the Epidemic Disease Act of 1897.

The shop will remain shut on alternate days of the week in Prabhadevi, Worli and Lower Parel. This is being done to prevent the spread of coronavirus and to curb crowd in public places so that the social distancing can be implemented successfully.

Under the sections of the Epidemic Disease Act, all establishments including shops will be covered. However, there is an exception for the medical stores, grocery shops, fuel stations and banks.

As per the directive given the BMC, the shops on the south-bound roads in Prabhadevi, Worli and Lower Parel will remain shut on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday while the north-bound roads will be closed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The BMC has also said that those who fail to comply with the orders will be penalised under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier today, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh called on for strict legal police action against people who are trying or will try to evade the quarantine. This comes after several cases were reported of people, at risk to have contracted the coronavirus or COVID-19, using public transport.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday urged the people to not step out of their homes in order to curb the spread of the deadly virus in the state.

“The situation is not critical but it is worrisome,” Thackeray said.

While addressing the public through Live stream in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, CM Thackeray urged the citizens across Maharashtra to support the government’s initiative and instructions.

Maharashtra has become the worst-hit state in India with 49 active cases of the coronavirus or COVID-19 and one casualty.
