The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to upgrade its Disaster Management Cell. The BMC unit will replace the outdated messaging system with an updated digital system. The civic body has allotted ₹10 crore for the same in its 2020-21 budget.

In a metropolitan city like Mumbai, emergency situations like fire, waterlogging, bridge collapses keep arising. However, in order to deal with it, the BMC has an analogue wireless communication system, which was set up in 2009 and they same are in use even till date. .

The system is outdated and sluggish. Also there have been repeated complaints of errors in the system. The workers too, are required to work more on the system manually. Due to which, it is difficult for the workers to operate in emergency situations, and they cannot optimally function.

Accordingly, the BMC unit has decided to replace the analogue VHF system with digital mobile radio (DMR). The automation of the system is expected to help the cell function with ease. The DMR has advance communication features like geo-fencing and geo-tracking.

Alongside, the radio system will also have a non-interception by unauthorised communication network, superior voice quality etc. The proposed system can also be integrated with other communication systems used by the BMC. In 2020-21 Budget, BMC has made a provision of ₹10 crore for the project.

Alongside, under the Mumbai City Surveillance (MCS) project, it has been decided that the civic body will install 500 more CCTV cameras in the city. The live feeds of the cameras will be available to the disaster management cell control room. So far, 5,000 CCTV cameras have been installed by the state government under the project.

Therefore, the upgraded system will help the disaster management cell to counter the issues faced due to the outdated messaging system.
