The INR 15 crores tender for maintenance of Byculla zoo's penguin enclosure for three year is still under review by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) following opposition from corporators. With the review process ongoing, they have extended the existing agency’s term. This has happened for the second time since October.

In September 2018, the contract was awarded to M/s Highway Constructions for INR 11.5 crore for three years for the upkeep of the penguin enclosure. The contract expired this year on September 30. Following this, the civic body provided a INR 45 lakhs extension to the contractor for 43 days, starting Friday, October 1.

The first extension expired on Friday, November 12. Therefore, the BMC has now provided a second extension to the same agency until a new contractor is appointed.

The civic administration is yet to disclose the term of the extension and the amount to be paid. On Thursday, November 18, the extension proposal will be tabled before the statutory standing committee for information.

Earlier, the opposition had slammed the BMC for its tender worth INR 15 crore, following which they are reviewing the tender.

Meanwhile, to avoid giving continuous extension to the existing agency, a few days ago the BMC has floated a contract of INR 35 lakhs for the upkeep of penguins at Byculla zoo for one month.
