Amid rising fire incidents, in its first lot, the Mumbai fire brigade gets 12 firefighting bikes over the weekend at the city headquarters.

This is the first time the force will get fire bikes which are meant to act as first responders.

In a first of its kind, these bikes have a water tank, fire extinguisher, siren, wireless communication gear and hose drill attached. Additionally, they also have a 30 litre tank capacity and can shoot out water through a high pressure pump at eight litres per minute.

As per reports, officials said that another set of 12 bikes are expected to arrive by the end of the month, taking the total number of bikes to 24. These will be deployed at fire stations of every civic ward.

Considering Mumbai’s traffic and congested areas, the response time for blazes especially during peak hours touches 20-25 minutes in suburbs while in the city area it is around 15 minutes. Therefore, with these bikes, the fire brigade hopes to improve time taken to responding to such incidents.

These bikes could reach the site first, navigating quickly through traffic if any. Officials stated that the plan is to display the bikes first at the fire safety week slated to be observed from April 14. Before actually commencing their use on ground, the officials added that the essential formalities like RTO registration and training to our fire officers would be required.

For those unversed, in October last year, INR 3 crores proposal to purchase of firefighting bikes was approved by the civic standing committee.
