The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is likely to revise parking rates at 55 street parking lots. The rates for an hour for a four-wheeler will cost between ₹40 and ₹60 and ₹5 to ₹15 for a two-wheeler.
Recently, the BMC released 55 tenders to appoint contractors for maintenance of street parking lots at Colaba, Marine Drive, Churchgate, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, and Chembur. These parking spots are either maintained at the ward level by charging nominal rates or are free.
As per the civic official, by July 21, contractors will be finalised for the said 55 plots and the proposal will be then tabled before the standing committee. Prior to this, in July 2017, the BMC had floated tenders for 88 street parking lots in Mumbai and has extended the last date of bidding by seven days to July 7 as 50 per cent of these contracts are reserved for women self-help groups, who asked the BMC to give them more time.
In 2015, the BMC announced its parking policy which was put on hold by the state government. However, by 2016, the civic body lifted its stay on the policy.
As per the policy, Mumbai has been divided into three categories i.e. A, B and C, depending on the location and congestion. The 55 parking spots that spread over eight wards come under A and B categories.
