After the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) compelled the big societies and commercial establishment in Mumbai to segregate and process their waste, the civic body now will start composting waste in its own municipal markets.

On a trial basis, the civic body is planning to install organic waste converters in four of its markets before implementing it in other markets.

If things fall into place, this will be the first time, the civic body will process the wet or organic waste into manure. The cost of this project is estimated to be around ₹12 Cr which includes the installation and maintenance of the units by the contractor for a period of five years.

On a daily basis, a total of 27.5 metric tonnes of waste is collectively produced in Dadar, Borivali and Malad markets. Hence, the composting units would be installed the above said wholesale vegetable and flower markets.

The said proposal will be presented to the standing committee and once it is approved, the civic body will install the units within six months.

A civic official to Hindustan Times,

On a daily basis, 46 metric tons of garbage is generated in markets and so we will be installing waste converters in five to six places for disposal of this trash. Along with this, we have asked people to throw the waste in the designated places so that it will help civic body contractors to collect waste,” Deputy Commissioner (Special) Nidhi Chaudhary.

Earlier, the BMC had issued a directive which stated that residential societies or office complexes that produce over 100 kilograms of waste daily must segregate waste and install waste processing units in their compounds.
