The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a plan to make Dadar (East)'s Five Gardens accessible for people with disabilities and vulnerable groups. The project is part of the Accessible India Campaign, also called the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan.

Five Gardens is a Grade III Heritage Structure in central Mumbai. It is a popular spot for residents of King’s Circle and Parsi Colony.

The area is known for its greenery but is currently difficult to navigate for people with special needs. It is divided into five sections, labelled A, B, C, D, and E. Common pathways connect these sections. The garden also has uneven basalt stone pathways.

To address this, the BMC has hired Access to Hope, a non-profit organisation, as an expert consultant. As per a report by Indian Express, the project will be implemented in three phases. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Here's all you need to know:

  • In the first phase, footpaths and a nearby public toilet will be made accessible.
  • In the second and third phases, work will focus on the garden area and its pathways.
  • The goal is to make all parts of the garden accessible.
  • Efforts will be made to maintain the heritage value of the site.
  • The surface of the garden will be levelled to allow smoother movement.
  • Special rides, including swings and merry-go-rounds, will be installed for children with disabilities.
  • Tactile flooring will also be added to help visually impaired individuals.
