The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to temporarily close down the three new jumbo COVID Care Centres – Malad, Sion and Kanjurmarg.

This development comes as Mumbai city continues to record lower daily coronavirus cases.

An official stated that these three jumbo centres and additional beds in two other existing jumbo facilities will remain non-operational for now. They will be activated only when required.

According to a data revealed by the BMC, Mumbai’s daily new cases fell below 400 as the city registered test positivity rate (TPR) at 1 per cent on Thursday, October 28, but the fatalities saw a marginal rise. There were 327 new cases and six deaths.

Of the total deceased, four had comorbidities. All six were above 60 years of age. The city’s recovery rate remained constant at 97 per cent as 365.

Moreover, the civic body was planning to outsource the management of the centres -- including increased bed capacity at two other centres in Dahisar and BKC (total 5,808 beds) -- which would have cost around INR 105 crores for three months.

In addition, with the reduction of COVID-19 cases across the twin city, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation had decided to close down the Dombivli Gymkhana Covid Center.
