The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) municipal division office will soon auction abandoned cars on the roadside in Dahisar area. A total of 119 vehicles such as 54 two-wheelers, 36 rickshaws, 29 four-wheelers will be auctioned by the North Division office of the municipality. Many of these vehicles are unnumbered and may have been used in crimes. Therefore, the BMC has decided to auction these cars after completing the entire process in this regard.
Along with unauthorised constructions in Mumbai, there is also a big problem of abandoned vehicles parked on the roadside. Often cars used in a crime or old cars are abandoned in public places or on the road. Such abandoned vehicles not only encroach on the road, but also cause traffic jams. Also, there is a possibility of mosquitoes spreading dengue-winter fever by accumulating water on the roof of these vehicles or in the vehicles.
As these cars stay in the same place for months, even the garbage workers cannot remove the garbage from that place. Also more crimes can be committed in or behind such vehicles. Therefore, such vehicles are impounded by the Municipal Corporation's Encroachment Removal Department under Section 314 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act. Vehicles in Dahisar, which have been seized in a similar manner in the last few months, will soon be auctioned.
In this regard, Nayanish Vengurlekar, Assistant Commissioner of R North Division of the civic body, said that a notice is first placed on a vehicle that has been in the same place for several days. If the notice is not responded to by the vehicle owners within a certain period, these derelict vehicles will be impounded.
The abandoned vehicles will be auctioned soon after completing the legal process. Some of the seized vehicles are registered outside the state. Also some may be financed by nationalised banks and cooperative banks. Also, the insurance companies may have defaulted on the payment due to the vehicle in whose name it is pledged, as well as the car being stolen. Therefore, if anyone has any kind of rights or mortgages regarding these vehicles, it has been appealed to the concerned to contact them. If no one claims in this regard, the auction process of these vehicles will be started. Officials said that this action is being taken as per the order of Municipal Commissioner regarding the disposal of abandoned vehicles on the roadside.
