BMC will beautify Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak's crematorium at Girgaon Chowpatty at a cost of INR 9 crore. BJP MP Gopal Shetty announced that 'Swaraj Bhoomi' will be beautified. After meeting BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal and Additional Municipal Commissioner, he said that the site will be developed to convey the thoughts of freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak to the new generation.
Describing the plan, Shetty said, “I have been pursuing this matter since 2012, but I was given only promises. Recently Modiji was honoured with the Lokmanya Tilak Award in Pune. After that met Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and sought his help for this proposal. He then instructed the BMC chief to look into it,”
Shetty also wrote a letter to Fadnavis on August 1 in this regard. “Modiji has built a war memorial in memory of martyred armed forces personnel. The Prime Minister also built a police memorial in Delhi. Similarly, the letter read that a memorial should be built in Mumbai in memory of the freedom fighters.
