A veterinary hospital is set to be established in Malad by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The proposed facility will be a 100-bed advanced veterinary hospital, aimed at providing modern medical care for pets, stray dogs, cattle, animals, and birds. This initiative is part of BMC's efforts to enhance animal healthcare infrastructure in the city. The foundation stone laying ceremony was performed by CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday, August 26.
This veterinary hospital will be built on a public-private basis in collaboration with the BMC and the Shrimad Rajchandra Jeevadaya Trust and will be operational in the next two years.Parel is the only animal hospital in Mumbai for treating animals. The number of stray and domestic animals in Mumbai has increased significantly in the last few years. The number of diseases in animals has also increased. Along with this, the number of diseases transmitted from animals to humans has also increased. However, there is only one municipal hospital in Khar, Mumbai. There are about 200 private hospitals.
Elite families can afford private hospital rates for their pet dogs and animals. However, poor families cannot afford to treat their pets. Also, stray animals have to bear their diseases on their own. Therefore, the civic body decided to start its own veterinary hospital. This state-of-the-art veterinary hospital is being built for the purpose of animal welfare.
In this regard, Head of the Veterinary Health Department, Dr. Kalimpasha Pathan said that modern facilities will be provided for the treatment of animals in the veterinary hospital to be built on a total area of 2,240 square meters in Malad. This will include a total of 100 hospital beds, X-rays, MRI for advanced diagnostics; state-of-the-art surgery and intensive care units; and specialised treatment facilities for small animals.
