With the outbreak of lumpy skin disease in cattle of various states, the Maharashtra government’s Animal Husbandry Department has directed authorities of all districts to ramp up the vaccination which will be offered free of cost.

This development comes as lumpy skin disease is spreading rapidly in Maharashtra.

The government has decided to offer vaccination against lumpy skin disease virus for free with 50 lakh vials to be made available from the next week. The farmers will not have to pay any charges for the vaccination of cattle.

On the other hand, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also adopted precautionary measures. Fortunately, no case is detected in Mumbai to date.

Now, the BMC teams consisting of officers and employees will start visiting various cattle sheds in Mumbai. The team will issue notices to cattle shed owners if the cattle sheds are unclean. It will visit every stable and cow shelter in the city and inspect every animal.

Further, the civic body will provide medical treatment to the animals found infected with the diseases, informed officials.

The inspection visits will be carried out to ensure the disease does not spread in Mumbai. The teams will include officials and employees of the health department, insecticides department and Deonar abattoir at different cattle sheds and stables of Mumbai.

The BMC team will also spray pesticides and clean the place and isolate infected cattle for treatment.

If reports are to be believed, there are around 20 cow shelters and more than 1,500 tabelas in the city.

Since the BMC did not give licences for tabelas earlier, it is not possible to state their exact number. Officials will also inform owners and caretakers about the symptoms of the disease. If they are found in their cattle, treatment can be started immediately, official added.

According to veterinarians, lumpy skin disease spreads through mosquitoes and flies as well as contaminated food.
