In a recently released report, it is understood that the Central and Western Railways have been paying water bills of INR 527 crore for the last 3 years. The matter has come to light from the information sought by RTI activist Sameer Zaveri from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The report shares information about the water arrears and mentions that since 2017, Central Railway has arrears pending worth INR 238 crore and Western Railway has total water arrears of INR 289 crore, making it a total of INR 527 crore.

Observing the same, a legal notice was issued by the Municipal Corporation. However, no action has been taken against the departments and no effort was made by the municipal administration to recover the arrears of water.

On the other hand, if the common man has arrears for the bills pending for 2 to 3 months, then the corporation disconnects its water supply immediately. However, the Municipal Corporation has given relief to the Railways, and this has raised several questions. As per reports, the Mid-Western Railway administration has not been paying water bills of Rs 527 crore for the last three years, despite which no action has been taken against the railway department, and only the notice has been issued

Officials are also being questioned about the failure to recover money and they have expressed the frustration that instead of taking legal action against them, the railway departments are being supplied with water. Addressing the same, RTI activist Sameer Zaveri has stated that the municipal administration should take legal action against the railways immediately.
