The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is ready to appoint private contractors who will go door-to-door to collect garbage from residential complexes as well as slums.

This announcement comes three weeks after it launched an intensive cleaning drive to improve sanitation measures in the city.

In a press conference on Thursday, December 21, Additional Municipal Commissioner Sudhakar Shinde, head of the solid waste management department, said, “We will issue tenders to hire private contractors who will be responsible for all sanitation related work in any locality, whether Be it garbage collection, cleaning of streets and roads or cleaning of public toilets, appointing contractors who will be solely responsible for collecting the waste and segregating it for transportation will ensure that the cleaning work remains incomplete. Responsibility should not be taken for living conditions."

According to a civic body statement, it is observed that people frequently dispose of garbage in drains, which leads to blocking in the wastewater drainage system.

Therefore, the work of the contractors will also include collecting garbage from drains to ensure that the drainage system is not blocked.

Payment to the contractor will be made partly, consisting of a fixed proportion while the remaining amount will be paid based on performance.
