Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to throw open its six refurbished markets - Kandivali, Bandra (West), Santacruz (East), Chembur, Ghatkopar (West) and Vikhroli (West) - to vendors and buyers between December 2018 to June 2019.

The six markets that have been revamped by private developers is based on the previous policy of the civic body that offered a floor space index (FSI) of 4 for construction.

In total, the city has 93 markets of which 35 will or are undergoing redevelopment and of the 35, 19 are being developed by private builders under the previous policy. Under the new policy, the civic body will develop 16 markets, four of which will get the traditional design. Six new markets have been reserved in the Development Plan 2034.

NM Luman, Assistant Engineer from markets department said that the previous policy did not work out well as in most cases the developers were not able to fulfill their promises. However, with the BMC taking over the redevelopment work, the civic body will now benefit from the extra FSI, which will help accommodate more PAPs, added Luman. He further said the civic body plans to redevelop seven markets, for which work orders will be issued next year.
