The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee has postponed the approval of the Gargai Dam project and sent the proposal back to the civic administration for reconsideration.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the BMC Standing Committee after several members raised concerns about different aspects of the project. The Gargai Dam, which is planned in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, is expected to supply around 440 million litres of water per day to Mumbai once completed.
Committee members questioned the increase in the project’s cost, the tendering and contractor selection process, and possible environmental impacts and rehabilitation issues for local villages that may be affected by the project.
Because of these concerns, the committee decided that the proposal should be reviewed again by civic officials, who must provide detailed explanations before the project can move forward.
The issue has also gained political attention because the construction of the Gargai Dam was mentioned as a key promise in the election manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party to improve Mumbai’s water supply.
