Mumbai, known for heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, is also notorious for waterlogging issues. In accordance to this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take elaborate arrangements for a flood-free monsoon a step further.

For which, the civic body has completed constructing underground water holding tanks in a few flood-prone areas across the city.

It is widely-known that the Milan subway, located between Vile Parle and Santacruz in the western suburbs, consistently gets flooded even after brief spells of rain. Therefore, the civic body is now implementing measures so that the water holding tank near the Milan subway can hold 3 crore litres of rainwater – its fullest capacity – for six hours.

The water storage tank near Milan Subway was constructed at a cost of INR 47 crore.

The BMC, which is trying everything possible to prevent criticism for its monsoon preparedness ahead of the civic polls, on Wednesday, May 24, announced that it will add two more pumps at the flood-prone Milan subway to avoid waterlogging.

Explaining the process, a BMC official stated that at present, 85 per cent water can be stored in the holding tank without using the pumps. To utilise the buffer 15 per cent capacity of the tank at the Milan subway, two additional pumps 3,000 cubic meters capacity and a 900mm diameter water pipeline will also be installed with the pumps.

BMC officials also said an additional pump will transfer the water back from holding tanks to the nullahs during the low tide.

The two submersible pumps – that are installed inside the tanks – have a capacity to pump out 30 lakh litres of water. The water is released in Irla nullah, said a civic official.

The BMC has constructed similar storage tanks at the Pramod Mahajan Kala Park in Dadar West and at the St Xavier Ground in Parel. The civic body has also increased the capacity of the Dadar tank and now it can hold up to 3 crore litres of water.
