A tragic accident was reported in the early hours of Friday in Wadala, where a 28-year-old app-based cab driver was killed after a massive 40-tonne industrial machine toppled onto his vehicle. The incident was said to have occurred around 1:30 am on BPT Road, beneath the Eastern Freeway in the Khar Ganga area.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Jamil Assaudhin Siddiqui, who had reportedly just completed a passenger drop in Sewri and was travelling toward Chembur at the time of the mishap. It was stated that the industrial equipment, which had recently arrived at Mumbai port, was being transported by trailer to a factory in Surat. During transit, the heavy machinery was said to have broken free from its restraints and fallen onto Siddiqui’s Ertiga, crushing the vehicle completely.

It was indicated by police officials that the stretch of road where the accident occurred is frequently used by trailers and other heavy transport vehicles exiting the port. The surface was described as uneven and damaged in parts. It was suggested that a severe jolt may have been experienced when the trailer encountered a rough patch, leading to the snapping of the chains that had secured the 40-tonne load. As a result, the machinery was dislodged and fell directly onto the passing cab.

A prolonged rescue operation was undertaken, during which three cranes were deployed to remove the massive equipment. Nearly six hours were reportedly required before the driver could be extricated from the mangled vehicle. The operation was said to have concluded around 8 am. The victim was rushed to KEM Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. A post-mortem examination was conducted, and the body was later handed over to his family.

It was further reported that the trailer driver had fled the scene immediately after the accident. However, he was subsequently traced and detained with assistance from the Thane-based transport company that owned the trailer. A case was registered against him under provisions of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence.

The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns, particularly on stretches heavily used by large transport vehicles. Questions are likely to be raised regarding load security measures, road maintenance, and enforcement of safety protocols to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
