On Wednesday, the Maharashtra cabinet approved Rs 5,000 each as means of financial aid to an approximate 56,000 performing artists throughout the state, reported the Times of India.

This one-off assistance will be accorded to all performing artists whose yearly income isn’t over Rs 48,000 in addition to them being domiciled in the state for the last 15 years. For this initiative, the cabinet has approved Rs 34cr.

According to the report, Subhash Patil, advisor to Rangkarmi Andolan, Maharashtra, an organization that represents more than 36 mediums of art as well as artists throughout Maharashtra stated that there are almost 10 lakh artists. Thus, he believes that the decision is incorrect since for almost two years artists have undergone hardships since they didn’t have any means of income. Adding that whilst, they made many requests to the government, the authority has undertaken a decision that will only aid some. He questioned the number of 56,000 stating that considering there are more than 29,000 retired artists whose yearly income is nearly Rs 48,000 and are offered a monthly state stipend. He elucidated that their organization Orchestra Artists Association Maharashtra, Mumbai, by itself has 15,000 personnel.
