Mumbai Police filed cases against 283 individuals for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol during the New Year celebrations, an official said on January 1.

The figure was 700 in 2019, 615 in 2017 and 567 in 2016. However, data for 2020 and 2021 were not available as breath analysers were not used due to COVID-19.

Besides, Thane police took action against 297 drunk drivers and Navi Mumbai police booked 236 motorists.

Meanwhile, action was taken against 1,119 for parking violations, 1,090 for helmetless riding, 310 for jumping signals, 299 for not wearing seatbelts, 107 for riding three-up, and 271 rickshaw and taxi drivers for refusing fare on New Year’s Eve. 

Thane police commissionerate officers said they had deputed about 36 officers, 264 police personnel and 75 wardens. A total of 80 places were barricaded to ensure the safety of the citizens during which 297 people were caught for driving under the influence while 299 other cases of wrong side driving, driving without helmet and rash driving etc., were registered, said a Thane police officer.

The Thane police further added they have been carrying out the special drive since December 26 during which action has been taken against 743 drunk drivers. Navi Mumbai police took action 309 drunk drivers between December 28 and 31.

The police's traffic department organised a campaign to catch all the drunk drivers in the city. During the 12-hour campaign that ended on Monday morning, January 1, security personnel were deployed at various important locations in the city.

Cases were registered against those who violated all the traffic-related norms, and fines were also imposed on them, the official added.

On New Year’s Eve, Mumbai Police deployed around 11,500 police constables, 22 DCPs, and 45 ACPs across all the crucial spots in the city. Around 2,000 police officers, along with SRPF, QRT teams, RCP, and home guards were also on the streets of Mumbai during the operation. 

An official said that they carried out the operation on the occasion of the new year in all five divisions of the city. The crime branch and the traffic department were associated with them for this operation. The traffic branch checked 7,964 vehicles at 112 nakabandis. From those 7,964 vehicles, around 1,806 two-wheeler owners were booked for driving without a helmet, and 1,355 motorists were penalized for various traffic violations.

Moreover, the city police carried out an "All Out" operation on New Year's Eve, intervening night of December 31 and January 1. Under this operation they took preventive action against various criminal elements in the city.

During the last week of December 2023, police checked 561 wanted accused and 326 absconders, and 23 absconders were arrested. Out of all the accused, police seized illegal weapons from 49 people, who were carrying swords, knives etc. During the drive, 77 warrants - both non-bailable and bailable - issued by different courts were served.

Police officials said that they took action against 104 people under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. These people were found either selling or buying contraband. They also acted against the illegal sale of liquor and gambling dens by raiding 95 places and arresting 63 people for being engaged in gambling.

Additionally, the police also checked the list of the extrajudicial criminals outside the city limits. On checking, they found that 50 accused had returned to the city illegally, and they were detained as well.

Police carried out the combing operation at over 200 places in Mumbai and checked on 614 record criminals. They found 90 accused at the spots. After tracing them red-handed, preventive action was taken against those criminals. They also checked 490 jail-released accused. Preventive action was taken against 50 of those 490 criminals for being involved in new criminal activities after their release.

Thousands of Mumbaikars gathered at the Marine Drive, Gateway of India, Girgaum Chowpatty, and other places on Sunday to welcome the New Year. All these arrangements made by the police made their new-year outing safe.
