In a significant development, the Maharashtra government has sent a proposal to rename Mumbai Central Terminus after Nana Shankarsheth. However, no decision has been taken yet on this proposal, the Centre informed Lok Sabha.

It has been proposed to rename Mumbai Central Terminus to Nana Shankarsheth Mumbai Central Terminus.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said the decision in such matters is taken after due consideration of the recommendation of various government agencies and other relevant factors.

The minister, however, said that the central government has not received any representation from the Namdar Jagannath (Nana) Shankarsheth Pratishthan, Mumbai in this regard.

According to the officials, the consent to change the name of any station or place is given by the Union Home Ministry only after taking NOCs (no objections) from the Department of Posts and Survey of India and also the Ministry of Railways.

These organisations have to confirm that there is no such town or village in their records with a name similar to the proposed name.

“…a proposal along with recommendation of the government of Maharashtra for renaming of Mumbai Central Terminus as Nana Shankarsheth Mumbai Central Terminus was received. Decision in such matters is taken after due consideration of the recommendation of various government agencies and other relevant factors,” he said replying to a written question.

Nana Shankarsheth, a 19th century Thane-born philanthropist and educationist, is known for the key role he played in the development of Mumbai.

Dadar TT flyover and Nana Chowk near Tardeo are already named after him.
