The Maharashtra government the Eid-e-Milad festival holiday in Mumbai city and suburbs. Now, a public holiday will be observed in Mumbai on Monday, September 8, instead of the originally declared holiday on Friday, September 5, .

The General Administration Department of the Government of Maharashtra has issued a notification in this regard. The Maharashtra Government had announced a total of 24 public holidays in the state for the year 2025 in December 2024.

The decision comes in light of the overlap between two major festivals—Eid-e-Milad and Anant Chaturdashi—which fall on consecutive days this year.

It is pertinent to note that this move comes as managing both large-scale events back-to-back would put significant pressure on civic services, traffic management, and police deployment.

Out of the 24 public holidays notified by the state government, Eid-e-Milad holiday falls on Friday, September 5, 2025. Eid-e-Milad is a religious festival celebrated by the Muslim community in large numbers. A procession program is organized on this occasion.

A day later, September 6, is the Hindu festival of Anant Chaturdashi, a meeting of various Muslim organizations was held on August 21, 2025 to maintain brotherhood and Hindu-Muslim unity in the state. In this meeting, the Muslim community has decided to organise a procession program on Monday, September 8, 2025.

For districts other than Mumbai city and suburban districts, Friday, September 5 is being maintained as a public holiday.
