The COVID-19 outbreak has undoubtedly left an impact on several industries with commoners suffering the most amid the partial lockdown in the city. With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allowing only 50 per cent workforce at offices, the majority of employees in private sectors are now working from home.

This has had a huge impact on the income earned by taxi drivers. Apart from public transport, Mumbaikars rely on taxis and autorickshaws for the last-mile of their journey. However, since the people in the city are maintaining social distance, the taxi drivers have reportedly witnessed a 50 per cent dip in their income.

An average, a taxi driver earns close to ₹1,300 on a daily basis. However, in the last couple of days, it has touched ₹500. People in Mumbai have been asked to practice "Social Distancing" and cut down on all non-essential travel, this has really had a bad impact on the business of taxi drivers.

Usually, the taxi drivers manage to get 40-45 trips but now they are struggling to even complete 10. Apart from this, given the circumstances, in this job they are unable to self isolate or practice social distancing like any other citizen in the city.

Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope, in a press conference conducted on March 19, 2020, said that the number of positive cases in Maharashtra has increased over the last few days. As of now, around 40 out of 49 cases in Maharashtra are positive due to travel history and the challenging aspect is to control this situation.

While a person from organised sector might have the liberty to stay at home and work from a secure place amid isolation. However, for people whose income depend on these people in the organised sector, making ends has been difficult during such difficult times.
