Central Railway will upgrade 12 non-AC suburban services to AC services on its Main line with effect from Monday, June 29.
These services are in fulfilment of passengers’ demand for more AC local services on the Main line and will be upgraded as replacement of existing non AC services.
With this upgradation, the total number of AC suburban services on CR will increase to 120, including 28 on Harbour line and 92 on Main line.

With this expansion, the number of AC local services on the Central Railway main line will increase from 80 to 92, while the total AC services across the network will rise from 108 to 120. Railway officials said the new services are likely to be launched shortly, with an AC rake that has remained unused for the past two months expected to be deployed for passenger operations.
The additional AC trains will primarily operate during morning and evening peak hours, catering to the large number of daily commuters travelling on the busy CSMT–Kalyan corridor.
Rather than introducing entirely new train slots, Central Railway will convert some existing non-AC suburban services into AC locals. The move is part of the railway’s broader strategy to modernise Mumbai’s suburban network and improve passenger comfort and safety.
Officials highlighted that AC local trains, equipped with automatic doors, help discourage footboard travel and reduce the risk of accidents caused by passengers falling from moving trains. The initiative follows the addition of 14 AC local services on the Harbour line on Maharashtra Day, May 1.
While AC services have seen growing patronage, the decision to replace certain non-AC trains has drawn mixed reactions from commuters. Some passengers have welcomed the improved travel experience, particularly during Mumbai’s hot and humid weather, while others have raised concerns about affordability and the reduced availability of regular suburban services.
Railway authorities are expected to release route-wise details and the revised schedule soon, enabling commuters to better plan their daily journeys.
