The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received bids from three prominent companies for the construction of two underground tunnels as part of the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. The bids were submitted after an eight-month period since the tender was issued by the civic organization in October 2022.

NCC Limited, Larsen and Toubro, and Afcons Infrastructure Limited have made bids for this crucial infrastructure project. According to Additional Municipal Commissioner P. Velrasu, the decision on the winning bidder will be made by the end of July.

The project has faced several delays. One of the reasons for the delay is the bidders' request for a deadline extension. Additionally, environmental approvals and authorizations from the forest department have contributed to the delays. To obtain new environmental clearance, the project requires the presence of water flow pipelines beneath the tunnels.

The estimated cost for the construction of the twin tunnels is set at INR 6,300 crore. It is part of the larger GMLR project, which is estimated to cost INR 8,550 crore. The tunnels will have a diameter of 13 metres and a length of 4.7 kilometres. It will pass beneath the ecologically sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).

During the construction phase, tunnel boring machines will be used to create the tunnels. The project aims to incorporate modern features. This includes efficient ventilation systems, adequate lighting, and advanced electrical security measures.
