The electricity supply to farmers, which was disconnected by the state-run Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MahaVitaran) due to non-payment of dues, will be restored, said state energy minister Nitin Raut.

This development came after the Maharashtra government faced unrest from the farmers and opposition. Besides, MLAs from ruling parties, including Balaji Kalyankar from the Shiv Sena and Prakash Solanke from the NCP, asked for the connections to be restored.

The opposition BJP disrupted the assembly several times demanding that the government keep its word and restore the connections.

Responding to this, Raut, in the state assembly, said that power to agricultural pumps would not be cut for the next three months to allow farmers time to harvest their crops.

He said arrears of domestic, industrial and commercial consumers by March 2021 amounted to INR 7,568 crores. Whereas municipal councils and corporations owed the MSEDCL INR 9,011 crores and government offices owed INR 207 crores.

Moreover, the outstanding loan is INR 47,034 crores and liability is INR 20,268 crores as of February 28.
