Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill is likely to come in action in the month of July. It is expected that the bill will make things cheaper for the common man. Abolition of Octroi will cost Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) a loss of Rs 7,000 crore annually. Considering the very fact, municipal workers are filling their pockets by levying octroi charges. Politicians have called for a meeting of the standing committee to discuss this issue.

Ravi Raja Opposition Leader in the meeting stated that misuse of octroi naka is in practice. Few days before Congress Corporator, Pramila Patil stopped few vehicles which didn’t pay the octroi charges. Items worth Rs 2 crore were recovered but no action was taken against accused, further added Ravi Raja. BJP group leader, Manoj Kotak raised question against BMC asking how the civic body will use this octroi nakas after it is discontinued.

Ramesh Korgaonkar, Standing Committee’s Chairman replied to Kotak’s statement stating that no unauthorized work will be carried out at Octroi nakas.
