Maharashtra government extends support to farmers amidst locust attack

In a conversation with Mumbai Live, Maharashtra Agriculture Minister, Dadaji Bhuse said that farmers in the state have been informed about the attack. Medicines and spray are being given by the government to support farmers.

The spread of locusts has brought in another bad news this year. The swarm of insects which came from Pakistan to India have seen an increase over the days and is now said to have entered Maharashtra. A few days back, these insects have attacked acres of farms in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. With their spread beginning in Maharashtra, farmers here are planning to take precautionary steps to ensure their harvest is not affected. 

As per reports, a swarm of locusts has already infested in many areas of Maharashtra like Nagpur, Amravati and Wardha. State Agriculture Minister Dadaji Bhuse, in a conversation with Mumbai Live, said, "These locusts have come to India from Pakistan, and farmers in Maharashtra have been asked to stay vigilant. Officials from the agricultural department have given proper instructions to the farmers and they have been told to spray the pesticides as these locusts attack the crops usually at night. These medicines and sprays are given by the government, we will be reviewing the status of the farms by visiting different areas in the state "

The spread of locusts amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused increasing concern for farmers across the country. It is said that these insects are active in the border areas of India from June to November. However, locusts attack was observed, for the first time this year, in India on April 11, 2020.

Experts say that the swarm of locusts fly in the direction of the wind and attack the crops at night.
