A fire broke out in a slum near Secreta School at Dhobi Ghat in Byculla on Monday, March 9. 

According to the fire department, the fire was reported at 5:40 am. No injuries have been reported yet. The incident took place at a packing material unit in Dhobi Ghat. It was a Leve 1 fire and the same has been doused. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.


The incidents of fire are on a rise. This is third such incident of fire that has been reported in a time span of a week.

There was a massive fire that was reported on Thursday, in a godown in Jogeshwari. While it took the fire tenders some time to get the fire in control. There was no injuries reported. On the same day, there was a report of another Level 1 fire at Borivali.

As per a report, the year 2019 was an extremely busy year for the city’s fire brigade with the highest fire emergencies reported in the last three years. 

In December, the fire brigade was busy attending to a fire at suburban Saki Naka in Asalpha. The fire took 48 hours to douse. In addition to this, two people trapped inside the building lost their life. Multiple firefighters too were suffocated as a result of this fire.  

As per a report, the fire brigade attended to a total of 97 fire instances in 2019. However, in 2017, the number stood at 46, suggesting that fire incidents have increased more than two-fold since then. 

The report further mentions that 2019 also saw the highest number of phone calls from citizens about fire incidents. The total calls received were 16,360, of which 36 were prank calls while 50 were false reports that came from suspicion upon seeing smoke. The calls reported in 2017 and 2018 were 15,704 and 15,361 respectively.
