On August 22, a massive fire broke out at Parel’s high rise Crystal Tower's 12th floor. According to fire brigade officials, 20 injured people were taken to KEM Hospital. Out of the 20, two passed away while the other two were brought dead to the hospital. Of the four dead, two were identified by the police as 62-year-old Subhadha Shelke and Bablu Shaikh. Remaining two are yet to be identified. Police have decided to carry out a DNA test of the two bodies that are yet to be identified. 

Crystal Tower was constructed by Rajat Supariwala builder in 2013-14. As per the fire brigade department officials, the tower had no OC. In 2016, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Building Proposal Department had sent a notice to Crystal tower regarding the absence of an OC. It is being said that, Rajat Supariwala builder will be prosecuted under the Mumbai Fire Brigade Act.  

Initially, it was a level-1 fire, however around 9:20 am, the fire intensified and reached level-IV. In total, eight fire brigade teams, four ambulances were at the spot. The primary cause of the fire is believed to be a short circuit.
