In the first week of November, the Mumbai Fire Brigade received nearly 159 fire-related complains amid the festivity. Of which, about 41 per cent were due to firecrackers.

According to the data revealed by the fire brigade, between November 1 and 6, MFB received 65 calls where fires had broken out owing to crackers burnt during Diwali.

Meanwhile, reports stated that about 50 per cent of these calls were received on November 4. On the day of Diwali on November 4, MFB had received 33 fire calls related to crackers and a total of 62 calls. The following day, they received 19 calls related to firecrackers, and on November 6, MFB got seven such calls.

On November 1 and 2, MFB got one call each, informing them of fires owing to crackers, and on November 3, they got four such calls.

“Every year, we appeal to citizens to be careful while bursting crackers during the festival,” a fire official said.

On Saturday, November 6, a major fire incident took place in the ground-plus-15 Hansa Heritage building in Kandivali (West) at around 8:30 pm. Following this, two people charred to death. Mayor Kishori Pednekar, who had visited the building premises stated that according to the information given to me, the fire started owing to a diya kept in the balcony on the 14th floor.

In 2016, a stray cracker set ablaze a massive fire that destroyed four floors of a 10-storey commercial complex in Lower Parel. There were no casualties in the incident that happened in the night and all the offices were closed.
