Patients and doctors at Seth G. S. Medical College and KEM Hospital have long faced difficulties due to the frequent breakdowns of the hospital's existing MRI machine. To address this issue, a new MRI facility is being set up and is expected to become operational soon.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Sharma has directed officials to expedite the installation and commissioning process to ensure that patients receive uninterrupted diagnostic services.

During a visit to KEM Hospital on Thursday, June 18, Dr. Sharma reviewed the progress of infrastructure work related to the new MRI machine. He instructed officials to complete the remaining work on priority and ensure the facility becomes operational at the earliest.

MRI Machines for Major 4 BMC Hospitals

The BMC has procured four MRI machines through its central procurement department for four of its major hospitals, including KEM Hospital.

KEM Hospital is one of Maharashtra's largest public healthcare institutions and caters to thousands of patients daily. A significant number of patients depend on the hospital for advanced diagnostic services, including MRI scans, making the new facility a crucial addition to its healthcare infrastructure.

Once operational, the new MRI systems are expected to reduce disruptions in diagnostic services caused by technical failures in older equipment, improving access to timely scans and treatment planning.

Apart from KEM hospital, it will be installed at Nair hospital, Cooper hospital and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (Sion hospital).

Focus on Digital Healthcare Services

Apart from reviewing diagnostic infrastructure, Dr. Sharma also assessed the Hospital Management and Information System (HMIS), a digital platform designed to streamline healthcare services.

The HMIS integrates:

  • Patient registration
  • Appointment scheduling
  • Laboratory reports
  • Medical records
  • Medicine dispensing
  • Billing services

Hospital authorities briefed Dr. Sharma on the platform's functioning and the challenges faced during its implementation. He directed all departments to work in coordination and maximize the use of digital systems to make healthcare services more efficient and citizen-friendly.

Push to Strengthen Cancer Care

With KEM Hospital celebrating its centenary year, special emphasis was placed on enhancing cancer treatment services.

Dr. Sharma directed officials to explore the modernization of the hospital's PET scan facility and related oncology services. He also instructed the administration to prepare a comprehensive status report in consultation with neighbouring Tata Cancer Hospital to identify opportunities for technological upgrades and collaborative improvements in cancer care.

Impact of Facility

The commissioning of the new MRI facility is expected to significantly improve diagnostic services at KEM Hospital, reducing delays caused by equipment failures and providing much-needed relief to thousands of patients who rely on the hospital for affordable and advanced medical care.
