Nine persons, including a 17-year-old boy, suffered burns in the accident. The condition of some of the injured is said to be serious. All the injured were admitted to four different hospitals.

According to latest report received, nine people, including a 17-year-old boy, suffered burns in a massive fire that broke out after a gas leak in Chembur area on Thursday late night, February 1.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials on Friday, February 2, said the incident took place in a chawl at Siddharth Colony in Chembur East around 11.45 pm. However, the fire was doused within 15 minutes. One fire engine, a jetty and ambulances were rushed to the spot, said fire brigade officials. 

The injured persons have been identified as Sangita Gaikwad (55), Jitendra Kamble (46), Yashoda Gaikwad (56), Narmada Gaikwad (60), Ramesh Gaikwad (56), Shreyash Sonkhambe (17), Shreyas Gaikwad (40), Vrishabh Gaikwad (23) and Sandip Jadhav (42).

The condition of three patients is serious. Yashoda, Narmada and Ramesh, are reportedly in a critical condition, having incurred 50-60 per cent burns, while the condition of the rest is stable.

All the injured were admitted to four different civic-run hospitals - Rajawadi Hospital, Sion Hospital, Shatabdi Hospital as well as Manek Hospital.

According to the information received, Gaikwad's house is in a building in Siddharth Colony in Chembur area of Mumbai. They were sleeping in the house when suddenly the gas cylinder exploded. The explosion was so powerful that the entire building shook with vibration. Meanwhile, the local people informed the fire brigade about the incident.

The police is investigating in the matter.
