While speaking at the online session and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that Electric Vehicles (EV) in India would 'cost the same' as petrol vehicles in two years.

The cost of running a car on ethanol will be just INR 65 per litre compared to Mumbai's petrol price of INR 109.98.

The session was held on Monday, November 22, evening. Gadkari said that cost of e-vehicles will be reduced gradually and will be at par with the same car model in petrol variant.

They will be setting up 600 EV charging stations by 2023. It would be installed across major highways. The government will also be ensuring that these charging stations are powered by renewable sources like solar or wind electricity.

He further added that maintenance costs of e-vehicles are low; however, the purchase price is still high. Meanwhile, the government has already reduced GST on e-vehicles.

Apart from this, the automobile sector will be soon introducing 'flex' engines. It can adapt to petrol and alternative fuels like ethanol as it is cheaper and also reduces pollution. The government wants to be less dependent on imported fuel and plans on manufacturing alternative fuel in India. They will also be encouraging petrol pumps to set up EV charging stations.
