Data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has brought to light that in eight months since the commencement of the 2021 financial year, the civic body has spent under half of its capital budget outlay 2021 which was aimed at curating or repairing civic infrastructure in Mumbai, reports stated. 

Till November 30, 2021, the BMC has spent 40.7 per cent of its capital budget outlay of INR 18,750.99 crore. This comes up to an aggregate expenditure of INR 7,629.33 crore projects across departments that include, Coastal Road, solid waste management, bridges, roads and traffic, health, stormwater drains and primary education infrastructure, mentioned narratives. 

The capital budget is a constituent of the annual budget, meaning it is the money put aside for repairs or construction or upgradation of the civic development activities in the city. The foremost expenditure from the capital budget has been undertaken for the Coastal Road project underway

For this, the BMC has incurred expenses of 96 per cent or INR 1,920.67 crore from its estimates of INR 2,000 crore for 2021-22. The Coastal Road project construction cost has been pegged at INR 8,429 crore. The total cost of which is estimated to be INR 12,700 crore, claimed the civic body in narratives. 

On the other hand, in the sewage project departments entailing the upgradation of the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), none of the set aside money of INR 1,339.94 crore has been spent so far, revealed the data.

However, other departments such as the roads and traffic department, stormwater drains department and bridges department have made use of the majority of their capital budget outlay 2021-22. This includes 86.7 per cent, 56.5 per cent and 55.7 per cent, respectively.
