The Maharashtra government recently undertook a comprehensive verification drive for beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, a welfare scheme designed to provide financial assistance of INR 1,500 per month to eligible women.

During this process, authorities discovered that nearly 71 lakh beneficiaries did not meet the eligibility criteria and were therefore removed from the scheme. The reasons for ineligibility varied widely, including applicants belonging to higher-income households, government employees who were not entitled to benefits, duplicate or fraudulent registrations, and even instances where men had been mistakenly registered under the scheme.

This large number of ineligible beneficiaries highlights significant gaps in the initial screening and implementation process. Over time, the inclusion of such beneficiaries led to a substantial financial burden on the state exchequer, with thousands of crores being disbursed to individuals who were not entitled to receive the aid. The verification exercise has now helped the government identify and eliminate these discrepancies, thereby improving the accuracy and integrity of the beneficiary database.

Following the cleanup, approximately 1.75 crore genuinely eligible women will continue to receive financial support under the scheme. The government expects that this corrective step will significantly reduce unnecessary expenditure and ensure that public funds are directed toward those who truly need assistance. Additionally, to ensure that no eligible beneficiary is excluded due to procedural gaps, the state has extended the deadline for completing e-KYC verification. This allows remaining beneficiaries to validate their details and continue receiving benefits without interruption.

Overall, the exercise reflects the government’s effort to tighten oversight, prevent misuse of welfare schemes, and enhance transparency and efficiency in the distribution of financial assistance.
