As Mumbaikars woke up to cloudy skies this morning, August 17, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted 'light to moderate spells of rain' in Mumbai and its suburbs for the day.

Similarly, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s forecast, generally cloudy sky with possibility of light spells of rain likely in city and suburbs are most likely to be observed today.

Moreover, a high tide of about 4.23 metres is expected to hit Mumbai at 12.53 pm today, stated BMC. The civic body also said that a low tide of about 1.42 metres is expected at 6.51 pm today.

The island city, eastern and western suburbs received an average rainfall of 1.61 mm, 1.37 mm and 1.18 mm respectively in 24 hours ending at 8 am, the civic body's data showed.

August accounts for around 30 per cent of the precipitation during the monsoon season as it is the 2nd rainiest month for Mumbai, next to July. However, having crossed over to the 2nd half of the month, the city has not received typical Mumbai rains so far. Average rainfall for the month of August is 560.8mm.

But the city has not recorded even double digit rainfall so far and the last 2 days remained totally dry. Conditions do not look to be favourable for any quick make over.

Airport observatory at Santacruz has recorded merely 31.7mm rainfall between August 1-16. This seems to be the lowest in the 1st fortnight of August.  There is no uptick likely in the next one week and may be longer.  Year 2015 happens to be the lowest in the last 10 years, with a monthly rainfall of 158.7mm. Earlier, the lowest rainfall on record was in 1972 with monthly figure of 108.6mm.  This month seems to be struggling reaching this lowest figure reached about 5 decades back.
