The fifth phase of the nationwide lockdown is scheduled to end on June 30. The Narendra Modi government announced lockdown 5.0 for the containment zones across the country while releasing guidelines to ease restrictions in other places under ‘Unlock 1.0’.

Earlier, during virtual interaction with the Chief Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the states and Union Territories (UTs) to chalk out their plan for the ‘Unlock 2.0’.

The first phase of unlocking eased many restrictions even in the hotspot districts and aimed to reopen the economic activity which has been adversely affected due to the lockdown in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

Similarly, the states are planning to provide more ease in the lockdown restrictions in the second phase of unlocking. According to media reports, the Maharashtra government is likely to provide relaxation to the public transport sector such as taxi and auto services in Mumbai and other cities.

Under ‘Mission Begin Again’, the Maharashtra government has already allowed several activities but with restrictions. The activities have been allowed in phases. All markets, market areas and shops - except malls and market complexes - have been allowed to function on the odd-even basis.

The private offices have been operational at 10 per cent strength in cities including Mumbai. People are hoping that there might be a little more relaxation offered in this regards. Movement of people in taxis and autos have been allowed but for essential purposes only and the local train services in Mumbai have started but only for employees working in essential sectors.

The Maharashtra government is likely to allow the movement of taxis and autos for regular services since the private offices have started their operations. An official decision regarding the same is expected soon.

in addition to this, salons and gyms are also expected to open in Mumbai along other cities in Maharashtra. The information was shared by Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Aslam Sheikh recently as he said that salons and gyms will be opened in Maharashtra, however, new SOPs will be issued for the same, within the next few days.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has ordered the extension of lockdown in till 31 July. The sixth phase of lockdown (or lockdown 6.0) will start from July 1. This has been done amid the increasing COVID-19 cases in West Bengal.
