This year the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received fewer complaints regarding the potholes as compared to last year. According to a report by Indian Express, BMC’s pothole management app has received only 196 complaints till July 14, 2020, while last year they had received more than 1,000 complaints between June 1 to July 9.

The pre-monsoon road works could not be completed to a great extent as the movement of vehicles and people were restricted with the lockdown imposed in the city. Out of the 196 complaints that the BMC received, 157 have been resolved and 39 are pending. Out of the 39 complaints only nine are managed by the BMC the rest are looked after by other agencies like MMRDA, SRA, PWD, and MHADA.

The lockdown has given the opportunity to the BMC to repair the roads which could not have been worked upon earlier due to the constant movement on roads. “Initially, for a few days, the repair work was stalled since many labourers had left the city. But later we managed to get labourers and undertook repair works on all major roads that had reported potholes,” said an official.

“Despite the COVID-19 crisis, our staff did their best to repair the roads. Also, the proactive steps taken by our ward engineers to attend to pothole complaints are helping. After receiving any complaint, we ensure that it is repaired as soon as possible,” said, Sanjay Darade, Deputy municipal commissioner (Infrastructure) and chief engineer of BMC’s roads and traffic departments.

Every year, especially during monsoons many people complain about the problems that they face due to the potholes. But this year it looks like people would get some relief from the issue as the BMC has been working hard even during the lockdown.
