More than 300 private security coastguards deployed along the Maharashtra coastline to secure the stretch after the 26/11 terror attacks have not received their salaries for the last six months, from September 2017 to February 2018.

A cut in the amount of funding designated to expenditure line of the coastline can be attributed to the non-payment of the guards.

The security guards have approached the fisheries department and have been assured attention. According to a security guard, they are working in three shifts without proper equipment like shoes, uniform and power battery.

The state fisheries department had deployed 296 private security guards, including 23 supervisors at 91 locations in coastal districts including Mumbai as per the recommendations made by the Coastal Security Committee. Out of the 525 fish landing points, 91 are sensitive where monitoring of the number of boats, their trips, and fishermen on them is required to be done by the private guards. The state has a 720 km-long coastline.
